Orca Experts Go to SeaWorld
John Hargrove and Dr. Ingrid Visser know killer whales better than anyone --- they've both been swimming with them for decades. They're also both outspoken advocates for orca welfare and conservation. We went to SeaWorld with them, recorded some harrowing things, and caused a bit of a scene.
This video is the result of an ongoing killer whale project called Superpod. To learn more about our project, hit us up and follow our journey on social media.

SeaWorld Orca Floats Motionless in a Tank (TIMELAPSE)
Переглядів 288 тис.9 років тому
In real time, the scene lasted 6 minutes. We shot this at SeaWorld of San Diego, and played it at the Coastal Commission hearing to approve SeaWorld's $100M expansion plan. This video played mere minutes after the Chief Vet at SeaWorld testified that their orca are "not bored." This video is part of an ongoing documentary project about the endangered population of orca in the Pacific Northwest,...
#Superpod4: Help Us Tell The Story Of Endangered US Orca

We're 5 friends attending and documenting #Superpod4 - a gathering of endangered orcas and their supporters in the Pac-NW. Help us tell their story.
The voice of that woman:"Welcome..."- it is as unreal as the whole Shamu- BS and their stories about captivity. This voice is like fingernail's on a chalkboard for me.
This mother with it's calv makes me frustrated and sad.How can somebody not see this???
There is value in entertainment. It's just not what you think it is.
They don't belong in captivity!!!!! Stop catching and breeding in small tanks.....😭😭
I want to rescue them all 🥺
I can't watch those clips of trainers submitting the orcas it breaks my heart, because I know how much they torture them. Why do humans feel like they must captivate animals just for entertainment?
Is this San Diego
They need the money I guess otherwise there is no reason to watch these shows, it’s certainly not because of the animals, they are happy when they live free and not in captivity...
They call themselves “experts” when they can’t even identify the whales properly
What do you mean identify? They know they’re orcas, obviously, why should an expert have to know the names of every CAPTIVE orca?
What I would like to see is the experts go to world leaders in Summit meetings for example, to create laws/solutions to end this crap for good!!!!! I don't need another video about the evils of Seaworld--- come on people, stop wasting your time trying to convince people of things most of us already know. Can these leading experts be strictly solution driven? Constantly bad mouthing Seaworld isn't the answer, true conservation & strict laws could change everything!!!!!! BTW 'F' you Seaworld!!!
Her baby is cried but her mother is floating
SeaWorld is very similar to the 1800s… it’s animals are slaves, it’s female dolphins and whales are treated like women in the 1800s when they had no rights and their children (specifically their daughter) were torn from them and they could do nothing about it. Shut down SeaWorld!
One time in 2022, Me and my mom and my sister went to Sea World, and I told my sister about orcas in captivity and how I feel about it, because it's just wrong. Dead wrong! And yet, my mom does not understand it. People who have never seen the two superior movies "Blackfish" and "Free Willy" will still go to Sea World and not care about what anyone else says about bringing wild orcas to captivity. Not only that, but also after our trip, I thought to myself: it's 2022 and people are still keeping the orcas in captivity at Sea World, and they have never seen Blackfish nor Free Willy. There is no hope.
Places like SeaWorld shouldn't exist anymore. They need to be free
And that don't look good for them to riding on them whales backs and standing on their nose that's abuse
Pretty sure she's sleeping.
Those who go and watch the shows are abetting something horrible and shouldn't do that. I get that a lot of people don't know about this, but they should learn about this horrible behavior. Gross!
i find Ingrid vissar to be so obnoxious. As an animal advocate what does visiting parks and taking pics and saying this is wrong do for the captive orcas ??? she makes so much noise and yaps her mouth but it does nothing. they can’t just be released in the wild they wil die. They should have never been taken from there families I do agree with that but it’s an unfortunate past.
Did you watch any of her videos? She never said they should just release them into the wild, her goal is to send them to sea pen sanctuaries, which are much bigger and deeper, where they will also be properly cared for instead of being taught silly tricks for profit. If they wanted to release one after that, they would first teach it how to hunt and survive again for months to years, like they did with Keiko, instead of just opening the gates and sending them on their way. Also, what could she do besides informing the public about this, as a marine biologist? Unless you think the best option is to sneak into all of these abusement parks, not only use a carrier for multiple orcas but also transport them likely over a thousand miles to where they were first captured, the only thing she and we can do is tell others about this, so they don’t buy a ticket. Sure, millions of people still go to Seaworld and similar places every year, but I believe Seaworld’s sales have decreased significantly over the years, and that’s what led them to supposedly stop their breeding of orcas. They know that these intelligent beings suffer, that’s not what they care about, though, but money sure is, and hopefully the amount of people who go there will decrease further, so they can do something other than slightly bigger tanks
How anybody can support SeaWorld is beyond me. They kidnap, torture & abuse these animals for money.
Dude got fired years before black fish....hes a liar and a scumbag.
Activists assholes
Heartbreaking!! Black Fish was so needed! The woman expert is spot on when she says people by and large aren’t cruel to animals. When it was revealed what goes on, it immediately impacted their business I believe. I will say, however, back in the 80’s, we took our kids, and there was that bit of conscience that was poking me in the brain saying, “this is sad for these magnificent creatures to be in a tiny fish bowl”. But I pushed it out of my mind until Black Fish. Technology has come so far, now I can get on UA-cam and watch them in the wild without messing with my conscience. I believe the same about zoos. When an animal is injured and can’t be in the wild, zoos are ok.
Disgusting that in this day and age when we should know better we are STILL slowly torturing these highly intelligent/sentient animals to death in barren concrete boxes for the sake of entertainment/profit, and calling in "education" or "conservation"- SICK!!! Empty the tanks and retire dolphins/orcaas to sea pens where they can at least have some semblance of the life they were designed for. If you buy a ticket to one of these abusement parks you are no better than those who profit from them - your money esures the misery continues!
Sea World needs to- 1: Change all form of management 2: release ALL animals 3: become an ocean-themed RIDE park, with no wildlife in it. MAYBE a fresh-water aquarium that is kept clean for theming, but not this… I used to love this place as a kid, I’m glad I grew up and saw the truth.
no one gives a s-- about these animals--is this a joke???????????
None of those people work at those people have no idea about them
Этим животным нужно очень большое пространство, как человек сидит в камере , так и они сидят в этих стенах, и развлекают тех кто заплатил , развлекают через силу, и каждый день , им очень скучно и депрессивно в этих стенах , это видно!😭
Captive orcas and wild orcas live in completely different environments. You cannot expect captive orcas to behave similarly to wild orcas because they live completely different lives.
Captive whales have the same instincts as wild whales,so yes they can and do behave the same. They can learn necessary survival skills through gradual training.. Keiko successfully lived in a sea pen for four years before swimming off and living another year at sea, where he died of pneumonia- happens in nature. Unfortunately they were never able to locate his exact pod, who knows if they had maybe he could have reintegrated. Regardless he lived a much longer and more enriching life than he would have had he not been rescued from the he'll hole he was imprisoned in for all those years.
The fact that it took three deaths (by the same orca, mind you), a whole ass documentary that featured ex-workers at SeaWorld and years of backlash to finally get this place to even consider stopping orca shows tells us a lot about the industry as a whole.
19 years working as a trainer and you didn't say or do anything until black fish? That's odd to me. If you cared as much as you say you do john you would have said something a long time ago for free. Instead you waited to get paid for it. Now Dr.Ingrid There is no proof but your own from looking at that baby orca and making your own assumption of what it's doing. There is no actual psychological scientific studied data by a scientist to prove your theory of that. Also what the orcas do in captivity is not what they do in the wild. So im sorry but believing all of this is nieve and honestly really annoying. Please stop hating on the orcas in captivity and actually care about them, go see them for yourself! oh wait but you don't want to give seaworld your money. Well then I guess you can keep relying on these ridiculous claims and videos of such false information on the orca and what its thinking.
😂 Please tell us what education/xperience you have that makes your opinion move valid than that of Dr vaster who has spent decades studying orcas in their natural environment!! 😂😂 A quick google search shows that that is exactly how orca calf's feed. Clearly you have know idea what you are talking about! If you truly cared for orcas you would refuse to visit abusement parks, and admire them in their natural environment where they belong.
:(
Draft 🐬🐬🐬🐬🐬🐬🐬
I can’t believe all these people who claim they are all about rights for animals still pass through these gates . Just like circuses in United States died , so will these so-called water parks for educational purposes will also
Wow
Hitting close to home rn I bet :(
These animals are so fascinated about humans Due to their intelligence and self awareness however, humans are abusing every bit of it.
Traurig, dass diese majestätischen Tiere in Planschbecken gehalten werden. Tierquälerei.
John hargrove has said BS .
FREE ORCAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've recently taken an interest in orca, dolphins, whales, etc. Through learning about these beautiful, majestic creatures, I've come to realize that Sea World separating these orca from their pods, keeping them in captivity and forcing them to do tricks for paying customers is tantamount to abducting a child away from their family and keeping them locked in a small room, only letting them out to dance and juggle as entertainment for houseguests at your beckon call. It's cruel and despicable. Sea World needs to do the right thing, for once, and free the orca to the sea where they belong and deserve to thrive!
They don’t need to thrive!
Ingrid. Go see your chiropractor. We're worried.

BENDICIONES A QUIENES SALVAN VIDA ANIMAL ..🙏🌎
Boycott SeaWorld they are cruel by starving the whales for tricks to "entertain" us at their sealife jails!!
It has been illegal in the UK since May 2018 for circuses to have animals performing. Maybe the US need to catch up. SEAWORLD is basically an aquatic circus.
John Hargrove is cute af. Hit me up. 😂
I visited Sea World as a child and as an adult. I loved Sea World because I got to see marine creatures up close. At the time, I would have never seen them up close otherwise. However, thank you very much for bringing the plight of these magnificent marine mammals to my attention over the years. I have watched other videos showing these intelligent Orca in their wild home doing their Orca behavior and now I truly understand that they belong in their wild, native homes and not in a park or zoo. It's so sad to see these beautiful creatures with psychological issues from living year upon year in a sterile park environment. They belong in the wild ocean with other sea creatures and plants and talking to one another.
I went to Disney in Florida back in 1989! My parents asked if I wanted to go to SeaWorld? I said No! I knew then it was so unnatural and just cruel to keep them there in those oversized bathtubs!! I was a huge fan as a kid of National Geographic’s & Wild Kingdom aka Mutual Of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom to! This was before we had Discovery & Animal Planet.. Now I know that a lot of if not most of the trainers that worked there loved those animals! And most didn’t really know better then! Key Word.. Then! Today we know so much that there’s just no room for excuses! Back then researchers and scientists did know a lot more than the trainers did but SeaWorld had them brainwashed, however this was pre-internet and pre-social media days!
You rock! If people can't learn from new generations of children, This world is in serious trouble. Humans don't understand that our world can go haywire and it will be our fault.

Makani was the orca who was bumping Kasatka, at this age he was already over 2 1/2 years old at this point, he was completely weened off his mother’s milk and was eating fish. Orcas will still head bump their mother’s to keep a close relationship with them, you see this in the wild and in captivity. I don’t 100% agree with seaworld but many people overlook the fact that they are not exploiting these animals for profit, the current day seaworld is a lot better than it was 10+ years ago. I would like to add that what the animals do in shows is a good way to gain exercise and they are completely voluntary they are not starved in any way, each orca has a diet that is unique to each animal, they are required to get that amount of fish every single day regardless of what training session they do or do not participate in. Seaworld is also a recuse rehab and release organization as well as a non profit one. These animals have grown up in sterile tanks and many of them would die if moved to a seapen or released into the wild. I would suggest that anyone who has watched blackfish also read into other things seaworld has done as the “documentary” is 100% biased but does hold truth to it. Again I do not 100% support seaworld but there are much worse places out there.
i dont see how sending a orca to a seapen would kill them thats the best thing also releases can work elsa the lion spent most of her life in captivity then was released and was fine she even had her own kids im not saying everyone can but my point stands
@@sandystar6248 I do see what your saying and I do agree with you, but Elsa was also a lion and their ecosystem differentiates from that of an orca’s. As far as the seapen goes, it’s really hit or miss it depends on the animal, especially since almost all of the orcas were bred in captivity and those who weren’t are well into their forties at least. Many of them wouldn’t know how to survive in the wild and if they are put into seapens, they could die because they don’t have the immune system to survive in waters that more than likely have diseases that would kill them but not native orcas. Some might survive others might not. I don’t think that’s a risk seaworld wants to take as they are now promoting the safety of these animals for generations to come so at least they are doing something whereas places in other countries are still capturing, breeding, and selling their orcas to other organizations. Seaworld is one of the best locations for captive orcas, not saying that any location is good. I do not believe nor support the entirety of seaworld but some of the alternatives of what could happen to the orcas are worse. I mean no disrespect to your comment as I do see how some orcas would do well in seapens but I don’t think seaworld wants to risk losing their animals as right now they want to protect them for future generations, both in captivity and in the wild.
@@soldierinadream9380 in a seapen a docter will always help them if they get sick so no worries if we put a seapen for the iceland orcas in iceland thats better for them then other places lions are way less smart then orcas and not as strong im just saying if a lion can do it a orca can also im not going to talk about keikos release just when he was put in a seapen keiko was captured when he was 3 and spent 19 years in captivity he got put into a seapen he got so much better he had no flaws with it also loads of other animals that have spent years in captivity and are sent to seapens are fine this is not about release its about seapens
@@sandystar6248 I see what your saying and it is quite accurate but if the orcas have grown up in sterile tanks their entire lives and then are put in a seapen where there is flowing water with diseases, veterinarians can help but the animal also has to have an immune system in order to beat it, medicine can’t do all the work and that’s been quite evident in captivity. I would love to see these animals in seapens but I don’t think seaworld would risk their animals safety because truthfully they do care about them. I view keiko’s rehab and release as a success but every animal is different and there is no way to tell how an animal will react in the same situation. Seaworld has definitely done terrible and shady things over the years but the seaworld that’s open today is much more different and they are educating people more about orcas. All of seaworld’s capture orcas have spent at least 40 years in tanks so they have probably forgotten a lot about the 3-4 years that they lived in the ocean and a lot of the skills they used are probably forgotten too, I’m not saying they can’t be relearned but it’s going to take a lot longer than it would for Keiko. A lot of the orcas probably wouldn’t be cleared for release. I understand that this is not about release but seapens could still be a struggle for some of the animals to adjust too, especially for the captive borns who have never experienced the ocean. The concept of seapens isn’t negative for me but I see that staying at their locations right now would be the better option until seaworld or another organization would be able to provide evidence, not just about keiko but maybe other species of dolphins, and then I would be more convinced.
I'm so glad my family and I don't go to SeaWorld anymore. I feel sorry for these orcas. 😢
